Bottle Drive Thursday Oct. 19

The bottle depot truck will be at the school from 8:15 – 9:00 a.m. this Thursday, October 19th to collect refundable beverage containers. All funds collected through bottle drives support enriched learning at the school.

At our September bottle drive, Hillhurst School families raised $349.20 and recycled 2,952 containers. Let’s keep this momentum going! Each and every refundable container makes a difference and students are proud of this difference that THEY are making.

The bottle depot truck will be at the school on the third Thursday morning of each month, with the exception of February, when it will be there on February 22nd. Permanent bins for refundable beverage containers are set up at the school, so feel free to send or bring in your bottles at any time. Finally, refundable beverage containers always can be dropped off at the North Hill Bottle Depot (336 41 Avenue NE) to the account of Hillhurst School.

Thank you for your support!

New School Year, New Fun Lunch

Take a break from making lunch by purchasing a fun lunch once a month for your student to enjoy. All students (grades 1-6) are invited to participate in this year’s Fun Lunch program, the last Thursday of each month.  Please note: we will not be hosting a Fun Lunch in December this year.

The first Fun Lunch of the 2017/18 school year will be on Thursday, October 19th (cash orders must be in to the office by Friday October 13th before 12:30 – and the online order deadline is this Saturday Oct 14th at midnight!)

This year we are offering Subway again as our monthly Fun Lunch vendor.

Why? Healthy choices, locally sourced from Kensington Subway, ease of service (sandwiches are made to order and labeled with each student’s name), and more menu variety.

What? Subway sandwiches (made to order) now offering Gluten free bread, Salad (GF option), or a limited number of Subway personal pizzas (only available with online ordering). Side items also available: Apple juice, Rice Krispy square, 100% fruit snack.  Subway’s prices are slightly higher than last year, but your student’s fun lunch item is still at or below Subway’s in-store price.

How does my student participate? Same as before, to order online please visit  Students must re-register with their new grade and room number for 2017/18.  For those who cannot order online, hard copy order forms are available in the school office for cash payments or Fairy Lunch.  Please note:  the personal pizza option will not be available on paper order forms this year.

***Each month the online order deadline is the Saturday before Fun Lunch, or the Friday at 12:30pm into the school office for cash orders.  This is a computer program deadline that cannot be overridden and unfortunately late orders cannot be processed in the system after Saturday.  Please ensure that you place your child’s Fun Lunch order before the deadline. Orders for any/all upcoming dates can be placed in advance.***

Volunteer! One parent volunteer is needed to serve each class each month. Get a chance to hang out with your student at lunch, and have a complimentary sandwich on us.  Please sign up at SignUp Genius for this or any upcoming Fun Lunch date. Choose a Fun Lunch date to volunteer at the school from 12:00-12:45pm.

Support your child’s success at Hillhurst School by volunteering

Throughout the school year, Hillhurst School Council supports different events and programs that enhance student learning, from fundraising to family dances to Career Day. All of this can only happen with YOU – parents and guardians of Hillhurst School – who volunteer your valuable time. Thank you! If you haven’t already done so, consider making time to help in some way this school year. Whether you have one hour or ten hours to give, you CAN help. A little time can make a big difference.

Studies show that students who have positive parent/guardian involvement are more likely to:

  • Be motivated
  • Earn higher grades
  • Have better behaviour and social skills
  • Continue their education to a higher level

Take a look at the Hillhurst School Council / Society Volunteer Opportunities booklet which outlines volunteer opportunities with Hillhurst School Council. Have a spare hour once a month? Come help with a bottle drive! Enjoy sports? Consider helping to organize Sports Day. Many opportunities are available to match your interests, abilities and availability. Check the volunteer page for current volunteer opportunities.

If you have questions or can think of another way to help, please feel free to talk to any member of the School Council executive or email

Together, we can enhance our students’ learning during their time at Hillhurst School.
