Our Grandparent Reading Program is very important for our young learners. This program is run by generous individuals of the community who love children and want to help them learn!
The program runs every second Thursday of the month from 8:30am – Noon. The Grandparents get to read to the Kindergartens, Grade 1,2’s and 3’s. They also get to enjoy a complimentary afternoon tea & treats along with getting to know the other wonderful volunteers. Our kids look forward to this time with their Grandparents and grow quite the bond with them, as do the Grandparents!
We are looking for some brand new faces who would like to get involved in this one of a kind program at Hillhurst Elementary school! Please pass this message on to any “Grandparents” that you think would enjoy this program. Please see Grandparent Reading volunteers needed poster.

About the Grandparent Reading Program
Grandparent Reading is an important program where community “Grandparents” visit our school and buddy up with students for reading practice, math, and educational games. This is a very special program for our young readers under Grade 5 who are in the community program. Grandparents are matched to the same children throughout their school journey where possible. This allows a truly unique educational relationship to foster over a number of years.
We are always looking for Grandparents who are interested in reading with the kids. A volunteer security clearance form must be completed. Contact the school office at 403-777-6360.
We invite all Hillhurst School families to provide food donations for the days of Grandparent Reading. Please signup online to donate food.*
At break time during Grandparent Reading, a selection of food donated by families are served to the Grandparents by the program organizers. Each week a variety of items, such as sweets, fruit, veggies, savoury items, cheese and crackers are provided. Details and examples of items can be found online.
Food can be dropped off in the staff room before 9am on the day of the event and Grandparents Day organizers can plate, cut or reheat as necessary. We are only looking for food donations to be dropped off, no other volunteering time is required!
Any plates brought in will be left on the table marked “Grandparents Reading” inside the staff room beside the main office for pickup anytime after the event or after school.
Thanks in part to all the delicious food provided by parents, the grandparents keep coming back!
